13.5 million years ago Table Cape was formed as a volcanic plug the same as the Nut at Stanley. Being volcanic is why we have the rich basalt soil in this region.

The original inhabitants of this area were the Tommeginer people, they lived in this area for 8,000 years before European settlement.

Table Cape was named by Mathew Flinders and George Bass in 1798 during their circumnavigation of Tasmania to determine if Tasmania was an island or connected to the Australian mainland.

After a few shipwrecks in this region, it was decided in 1880 that a lighthouse was needed.

This site was selected, construction was commenced in January 1888 and the lighthouse was first lit on 1st August 1888.
